The Jerusalem Bible : Reader's Edition Click Here to Order
The best, most scholarly and co-incidentally most readable, translation available, as far as Mother Angelica and I are concerned.
This is again in print, having been taken away from us by those who came up with the brilliant idea of "The NEW Jerusalem Bible," which tries to lead us in the paths of modern righteousness by giving us
"inclusive language". I personally never felt that I would have to be so condescended to. I have no problem being a part of the family of man. All aside, this is an amazing and beautiful transation,
done in Jerusalem in the 1960's.

Catechism of the Catholic Church: Second Edition Click here to order
Don't let anyone tell you that this Catechism is only for the Bishops! Our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II says that this book is "A sure and certain standard for the teaching of the faith." He also says that this book is for ALL the Faithful! How better to learn and know your Catholic faith? Any question you may have is answered, linked and cross-linked, to topics within the Catechism, to Holy Scripture, and to the writings of the Church Fathers.

The Lord Click here to order
Monsigneur Romano Guardini! A light in the Catholic literary world and the world's spiritual darkness! Here is a most meditative Life of Christ
that no other equals in my humble opinion.
And the Word Dwelt Among Us: Meeting the Living God in Scripture Click here to order
There is unfortunately no image to accompany this title, another by Monseigneur Romano Guardini. But, no real matter. The real matter is that this is one of the most profound books of spiritual reading
and one of the best meditative helps you will ever pick up. Highly recommended!

Treasury of Wisdom Click Here to Purchase
This is a beautiful, moving book, and a perfect gift! From the description at Ignatius: "The words of Jesus of Nazareth continue to amaze, confound and inspire listeners as they did two thousand years ago. They resonate down the centuries, poetic in their simplicity, challenging in their meaning, uncompromising in their authority. Whether Jesus was describing the kingdom of Heaven, stripping away worn-out conventions or defining love and forgiveness, he chose direct, down-to-earth language for the new age he heralded, clothing his stories in imagery from the everyday world. Here, retold in the words of the Revised Standard Version Bible, are some of the most memorable sayings of Jesus recorded in the Gospels of his disciples Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. They range from frank, compassionate advice to devastating reprimands; from new interpretations of ancient law to chilling prophecies; from the parables of the Good Samaritan and the Vineyard to the two great prose
poems from his Sermon on the Mount - the Lord's Prayer and the Beatitudes. Illuminating Jesus' words are over 40 paintings by celebrated artists such as Raphael, Masaccio, Piero della Francesca, Caravaggio, Fra Angelico, Poussin and Millet. In this beautiful hardcover keepsake with a silk ribbon marker, the words and paintings combine to create a treasury that will appeal not only to Christian but to everyone searching for spiritual truth."

Another beautiful meditation by Monseigneur Romano Guardini, packed with insight, this time on the most Holy Rosary of Our Lady. A must-read, short and moving.

The Privilege of Being a Woman Click Here to Purchase
The book review says it well: Dr. Janet E. Smith, Saint Austin Review, July/August 2002:
"Every page is filled with insights that make one want to sit back and contemplate."
"Women historically have been denigrated as lower than men or viewed as privileged. Dr. Alice von Hildebrand characterizes the difference between such views as based on whether man's vision
is secularistic or steeped in the supernatural. She shows that feminism's attempts to gain equality with men by imitation of men is unnatural, foolish, destructive, and self-defeating. The Blessed Mother's role in the Incarnation
points to the true privilege of being a woman. Both virginity and maternity meet in Mary who exhibits the feminine gifts of purity, receptivity to God's word, and life-giving nurturance at their highest."

The Living God Click here to purchase
Romano Guardini, my newest favorite author, is able to open new avenues of the profound without the roadblocks of intellectual intimidation. Ever wonder, as a child, what God's face looks like?
For that matter, did you wonder yesterday? Read this book by Monseigneur Guardini.

Transformation in Christ Click Here to Purchase
Do you want to change your heart? If you want to change you have to want to change. Does that make sense? It does to me. This is one of the greatest spiritual guides written in modern times. Many of Dietrich von Hildebrand's works are out of print or have never been translated from the German, but thankfully this one is available to the English speaking world. Incredibly profound and yet incredibly practical, this is a must on a serious Catholic's reading list.

Eternal Life: What You Need to Know About Death, Judgment, and Life Everlasting Click here to purchase
Well, that's a big topic. But you may be amazed at what can be said in so small a space when the author, Romano Guardini, has such immense insight.

The Life and Thought of St. Edith Stein Click Here to Order
This is a perfect place to start learning about one of the most amazing Saints of the Catholic Church! A modern Jewish woman, converted to Catholicism, and then into a contemplative order, she was a brilliant philosopher with a
profound understanding of the nature and power of God's plan for womanhood. She was martyred in the Nazi concentration camps.

Salvation Is from the Jews: The Role of Judaism in Salvation History Click Here to Purchase
With all the brouhaha over Mr. Gibson's movie "The Passion of the Christ", this was an excellent book to remind one that salvation was, is now and always will be from the Jews.
Jesus was Jewish, Mary was Jewish, Joseph was Jewish, Peter was Jewish, John was Jewish, Paul was Jewish and I'm sure I needn't go on. But this book delves deeper into these very complex and fascinating words of Paul from Holy Scripture.
An extremely readable book, he discusses from the point of view of a Jewish convert how the Jews, God's "called-to-be-set-apart" people, are still involved in salvation history, and will be till the end of all.

The Most Holy Rosary Click Here to Purchase
Scott Hahn has become one of the most recognized names in Catholic culture. Here I have included the audiotape version, as the CD version, also available, is abbridged. Not only is this a good reading of the entire Rosary, including the
Luminous Mysteries of Pope John Paul II, but it also includes history and notes about the Rosary, with all of Mr. Hahn's unusual and helpful insights.

An inspiring collection of hymns, prayers, poems and songs in honor of the Virgin Mary . . . an ideal learning tool, and a beautiful way to spend your time...honoring the Mother of God.

Orthodoxy Click Here to Purchase
The most frighteningly brilliant and inspired thing about this book is that it was written before author Gilbert K. Chesterton converted to Catholicism!
This one book alone is responsible for the conversion of some of the finest minds in the Catholic Church.

Witness to Hope: The Biography of Pope John Paul II Click Here to Order
When I saw the documentary of George Weigle's book, I had to rush out and buy it. Even my non-Catholic friends who watched it said, "I had no idea that the Pope had this life!" If you read it
you will gain a new insight or two, not only into the very amazing and interesting life of a humble man, but into the ways God works within human history to further His own plan of salvation for all who heed Him.
A "must read" in my own little book.

Idylls and Rambles Click Here to Purchase

Father James Schall, author of this book "Idylls and Rambles", has the great ability to convey profound insights in terms that can set those of us who are not such deep thinkers to thinking. His essays on the Faith are some of my very favorite reading.
This particular book is a bit lighter in content, nonetheless offers many an opportunity to be surprised by a new thought. Besides, who doesn't want a book with the word "idylls" in the title?

Scandal of the Incarnation Click Here to Purchase
I quote from Ignatius Press' description of this great book: Saint Irenaeus was the first great Christian theologian. Born in Asia Minor in about 130 A.D., he became Bishop of Lyons and died as a martyr early in the third century.
His main work, Adversus Haereses (Against the Heresies), is as relevant today
as it was eighteen hundred years ago. It is a critique of Gnosticism, the 'anti-body' heresy, which, far from dying out, continues to flourish as the main threat to the Christian faith in our own day. With serenity and good humor, Irenaeus unfolds the unity of God's
purpose in creation and redemption, in Old and New Testaments. The flesh and blood which Gnosticism so despised has been assumed by God in the womb of the Virgin Mary, and glorified in the Resurrection and the Eucharist. In this book,
quotations from Saint Irenaeus have been arranged thematically in order to show the unity of his Christian view of the world. The texts have been selected and are introduced by the late Hans Urs von Balthasar, who is widely regarded
as one of the greatest Catholic theologians of this century. They are translated by John Saward. "Everything in Irenaeus is bathed in a warm and radiant joy, a wise and majestic gentleness. His words of struggle are hard as iron and crystal clear,
... so penetrating that they cannot fail to enlighten the unbiased observer." -- Hans Urs von Balthasar
