DIVINE MERCY

A Devotion
Given to Saint Faustina
by Our Lord Jesus Christ.

JESUS, I TRUST IN YOU!

fleur-de-lis

The Chaplet of Divine Mercy devotion was given to an uneducated and unassuming nun, Saint Faustina Kowalska of Krakau, Poland in 1933 by Jesus, who visited with her often and shared with her many revelations of theological import. She was required by her spiritual director to write everything down over the period of His appearance to her, and the resulting diary is called "Divine Mercy in my Heart" in the United States. It is a very long, and fascinating, comforting and exhiliarating account of a heart and spirit so in love with Jesus Christ so as to be sustained by this love alone. As is so often the case with those who love Jesus to the point of what to many appears to be madness, she was both sustained and nurtured by this love, and consumed by it. She died very young, at the age of 33, of consumption.

The Divine Mercy devotion consists of a chaplet prayed on traditional rosary beads, and gives promises to those who trust in the Mercy flowing from the heart of Jesus. Jesus had Sister Faustina have painted a very specific image of Him: we see Jesus standing before us, one hand raised in blessing, the other pointing to his Heart from which stream two brilliant rays of light. One ray is white, and represents the water flowing from His side; the other is red, the Blood that washes us for all eternity. The two together are indicative of His Mercy, which seeks to encompass all in fathomless love. At His feet are the words, "Jesus, I trust in you!". The first Sunday after Easter has been designated by the Church, at the behest of Jesus to Faustina, as Divine Mercy Sunday. The promises accorded to those who keep the Divine Mercy in their hearts will be listed below soon.

The Divine Mercy devotion was suppressed by the Church for many years, somewhat due to poor tranlations of her diary, and somewhat due to the Church's caution in view of the long and big picture...the Church is eternal, and must be sure of the veracity and adherance to truth of these private revelations in light of eternal Church teachings and Holy Scripture.

Instrumental to the release from censure of the Divine Mercy, is our deceased Holy Father Pope John Paul II, then Cardinal Karol Wotyla of Krakau. As Pope he later canonized Sister Faustina, in 2000 AD.

How to Pray
the Chaplet of Divine Mercy

The Chaplet is prayed on traditional rosary beads.
Beginning on the Crucifix, recite the Apostle's Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,
suffered, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
On the third day, He rose again.
He ascended into heaven.
He is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty,
from whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.
Amen.

Next, pray "The Lord's Prayer":

Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And, lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

Next, pray three "Hail Mary" prayers:

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now,
and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Next, pray one "Glory Be" prayer:

Glory be to the Father, to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit!
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,
world without end,
Amen!

Begin the first decade, and each decade thereafter, with the Offering prayer,
(on the bead that corresponds to the Our Father bead on the regular rosary):

Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity
of your dearly beloved Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ,
in atonement for our sins, and those of the whole world.

Then, on each of the 10 Mercy beads
(which correspond to the hail Mary beads on the rosary), pray:

For the sake of His sorrowful passion,
have mercy on us, and on the whole world.

Repeat this on all five of the decades of the chaplet.
Finally, on each of the three beads of the pendant leading to the Crucifix, pray:

Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One,
Have mercy on us and on the whole world.
