Alyce Beverly (Wille) Flaherty – Duluth News Tribune

Alyce Beverly (Wille) Flaherty, 92, returned home to her Heavenly Father on August 12, 2022. Alyce was born to Joseph and Cecil (Culligan) Wille in Fairfield, IA. She was a loving and helpful sister to her six siblings, Bob, Mary Jo, Cecil (Bink), Kathy, Marg and Mike. The family settled in Duluth, where she had a happy and busy childhood, attending St. Anthony’s Elementary School and Cathedral High School, where she met and later married the love of her life, Dillon Flaherty. The couple were just two weeks away from their 75th wedding anniversary when Alyce died. The couple had nine children.

Alyce felt that her greatest achievement in life was raising their large family. With grace and endless patience, she recognized and nurtured each child’s unique challenges and talents. You could count on her to support their every effort, listen to their concerns, and make every family gathering special.

Alyce had a generous, selfless, and beautiful spirit, embracing everyone who entered her sphere, making everyone feel cherished. This and her flair for entertainment were on full display at Lake Nancy, the wonderful “family resort” she and Dillon worked to create and share so freely with their family and many friends. She savored both the tumult and the serenity there.

Although always busy, Alyce found time to volunteer with Meals on Wheels, BirthRight, Gingerbread House, Holy Rosary and Cathedral’s Home and School associations, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and more. Remarkably, she also took evening classes at UMD.

Always ready for new experiences, Alyce has traveled extensively with Dillon and good friends throughout the United States, Europe, the Caribbean, Asia and the Americas. She also enjoyed camping, boating, and road trips with her family and friends.

Alyce lived a long and meaningful life. She will be remembered for her warmth, her kindness to all, her gracious manner, her resilience, her sense of fashion, her unstoppable energy and her keen sense of purpose.

Alyce was predeceased by her beloved daughter Brigid (aged 5) and sons Bryan and Brendan; and five of his siblings.

She is survived by her husband Dillon; children Terry (Patti), Tim (Susan), Beth (Tony) Rush, Dillon Jr. (Judy Goar), Sean (Mary Nyquist) and Kieran (Mark Higgins); daughters-in-law Betty Flaherty and Carrie Flaherty; 24 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren; his sister, Mary Jo Jensen; sister-in-law and close friend Kay Wille; and several nieces and nephews.

A Christian burial mass will celebrate Alyce’s life on Friday, August 19, 2022 at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Cathedral in Duluth, MN, where she was a member for 85 years. Visits at 10 a.m., Mass at 11 a.m. Favorite memorials at Holy Rosary School.
