KANSAS CITY, Mo. -James (Jim) C. Baker, 88, of Kansas City, died of Parkinson’s disease on Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at his home.
He was born on February 16, 1934 in Kansas City, the son of the late Katherine and ZZ Baker.
He graduated from Southeast High School and Washburn University, Topeka, Kansas in 1956.
He served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves from 1955 to 1962, working in the Guided Missile Radar Signal Corp. He married Patricia Gill on July 23, 1960 in Northampton, Pennsylvania.
Jim began his professional career with the SAGE project, then in the engineering and computer technology department of Western Electric.
In 1968, he began working at the Kansas City school system in the computer, purchasing, and budget departments. He became Executive Secretary of the Kansas City School System Retirement System and later served as Executive Secretary of the Delaware Office of Pensions. He was a member of the National Council of the Association of Retired Teachers, of which he was President in 1990-1991.
He was active in the Boy Scouts, winning the Eagle Scout award. Jim enjoyed playing baseball and was active in the little league until the age of 55, when he qualified for the Senior Olympics in 1999. He enjoyed traveling around the country and the world, including Milan , South Africa and Syria, as well as many religious. trips to Rome, Medjugorje, Fatima and Lourdes.
He liked to watch trains and cultivate. His most important and enjoyable job was to be husband, father and grandfather to his family. He was a devout Catholic and was a member of the Catholic Church of the Twelve Apostles, Platte City, Missouri. Also, a former member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and St. Joseph Ukrainian Catholic Church in St. Joseph.
Jim was predeceased by his parents.
Survivors include: wife, Pat Baker of home, Kansas City; son: Bill (Cathy) Baker, Shawnee, KS; Mark Baker, Myanmar, Burma, Dr Andrew (Cheryl) Baker, Macomb, Illinois and Scott Baker, Nice, France; grandchildren: Erica (Kevin) Lanning, Rachel, Drew, Elizabeth, Emma, Joseph, Evan, Liam, Cpl. Cameron, Tessa, Shelby Baker and Mady Lanning; great-grandchildren: Serenitee and Ke’ Asia Baker.
Christian Funeral Mass and Live Public Broadcast: 11 a.m. Monday, February 28, 2022, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
Family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, also at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, St. Joseph.
The Rosary will be recited at 2:30 p.m.
Interment will be at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery, Northampton, Pennsylvania.
