Bonita (Bonnie) Wendt, 73, passed away peacefully on Tuesday March 8, 2022 at Oak Crossing in the care of Hospice.
Bonita Dawn Frenzel was born on March 14, 1948 to Lawrence and Ruby Frenzel of Detroit Lakes. She grew up with her siblings on a small hobby farm near town with a variety of animals and had a special love for horses. She attended Holy Rosary Catholic School and graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 1966.
She briefly attended college where she met and later married her first husband, Arthur Jonas. Shortly after getting married, they decided to start a family and were soon blessed with their daughter, Sara. Bonnie and Art divorced in the early 80s.
During this time, she reconnected with her faith and has since stayed on that path. She really enjoyed studying the Bible and sharing what she had learned when you visited her.
Bonnie found love again with Philip Wendt and they married in 1985; with this marriage she gained three daughters-in-law, whom she loved very much.
Bonnie was a gifted artist and when she was younger she enjoyed painting, sculpting and macrame and later enjoyed using these creative talents for decorating. She had a green thumb and her houses were always filled with plants.
She loved being a housewife the most and was lucky enough to find Phil because he really loved taking care of her.
Bonnie was a dear sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend who will be missed by those who knew her. We know she is in heaven and it brings us joy even though we are sad that she is no longer with us.
Bonnie is survived by her daughter Sara (Wayne) Leitheiser, her stepdaughters Robyn Engel, Terri (Ryan) Eckhoff, Stacie (John) Eickhoff; grandchildren Alysa (Corey), Justin, Megan, Danielle (Alex), Jordan; step-grandchildren Christian, Dylan, Tiffany, Loren, Carter and Ben; great-grandchildren Rayne, Jayden, Asher, Paisley, Logan and Hallie; step-great-grandchildren Thomas and Robert. siblings Steven (Kay) Frenzel and Bev Palmer; siblings Susan (Dennis) Stai, Janie (Mike) Hulett, Sally (Dennis) Jepson, Paul (Carla) Wendt, Danny (Sande) Wendt and Holly (Bobby) Skillings.
She was predeceased by her husband Philip Wendt, her parents Lawrence and Ruby Frenzel, her sister Barbara Ronnigen and her brother-in-law Donald Palmer.
Visitation and prayer service will be held Monday, March 14 from 3-5 p.m. at the David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes. A private celebration of life will be held later in the spring.
Bonita’s family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Oak Crossing and Hospice of the Red River Valley for their care and compassion during the very short time that Bonnie was in care.
