Irene Ann (Tootie) Flanagan, 87, died Friday, November 11, 2022 at her home. Irene was born on a farm near Oriska, ND on January 6, 1935, to William C. and Katherine A. (Cook) Winkler. She graduated from St Catherine’s High School in Valley City, ND and worked at a bank in Jamestown, ND and Dakota Bank in Fargo, ND. Irene was married to Martin (Mick) Flanagan on October 17, 1959.
Irene was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and her life revolved around her immediate and extended family. Her favorite people were her grandchildren, and she was happiest to attend their events and give them her special handshake. Irene loved to organize holidays, and every corner of her house was decorated for the upcoming holiday. Irene was blessed with good friends, loved traveling to visit family, shopping and eating out, and her smile was the biggest when she won the pot of money in card games in family. She spent many years leading Campfire, Cub Scout and Scout troops; officer and president of parents’ associations; and volunteering in several roles for the Church of the Nativity. Irene began working outside of the family kitchen for her son and his NDSU fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon, in her senior year. She then started working in the deli at Case Wise Foods and then at the service counter where she enjoyed helping people. She retired with 20 years of service in 2009. Irene was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and served as an officer for 12 years, ending as regent.
Irene is survived by her husband, Mick; three children, Michael (Tania) Flanagan, Denise Flanagan and Holly (Ryan) Younggren; four grandchildren, Bridey (Lane) Hendren, Lena Flanagan, Cody Younggren and Colton Younggren; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; his siblings Shirley (Walter) Schwehr, William (Francis) Winkler, Georgena (Roland) Mohn, Fred Winkler and Douglas (Pearl) Winkler.
