Mary Matter – Detroit Lakes Tribune

Mary Matter, 90, Detroit Lakes, formerly of Callaway, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 25, 2022, of natural causes, at Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes.

Mary Matter was born June 13, 1931 in Austin, MN to Roger and Marcella (Turek) Dunn. She began her schooling in Red Wing, MN, moving with her family to Hampton, MN, Osceola, WI, Menomine, WI and Mahnomen, MN. Mary was united in marriage to Jerome Matter on October 4, 1949, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Beaulieu, MN. They farmed northwest of Callaway until they moved to a house in Buffalo Lake.

Mary and Jerome have traveled extensively visiting Alaska, Canada, the western United States and Mexico. They spent the winter in Texas, where she was a member of the Red Hat Ladies, loved to dance and loved to play cards. She was a senior gold medalist at Pinochle. She was a member of the Callaway Christian Mothers. Mary was a 4-H leader for the Riceville Fireflies for many years. Jérôme passed away on November 14, 2020.

Mary enjoyed bowling, playing cards, doing puzzles, scrapbooking and making ceramics with her daughter, Sharon. Mary’s was proud of its collection of plates and nativity scenes. She treasured her time in the kitchen and was known for her sauerkraut, turtle, apple pies and chicken ball soup.

Mary is survived by her children: Vicki (Orrin) Okeson of Detroit Lakes, Sharon Seykora of Fargo, ND, Connie (David) Motteberg of Gary, MN, Jerry (Nancy) Matter of Detroit Lakes, 17 grandchildren, 44 great -grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, brother-in-law Jim (Betty) Matter and sister-in-law Cleo Steffl. Besides her husband, Jerome, she was predeceased by brothers, Ralph Dunn, Darold Dunn, Gerald Dunn and Richard Dunn, sisters-in-law, Kathy Dunn, LaVonne Jacobson, Aileen Melis, Joyce Matter, brothers -in – right, Jack Melis, Leo Steffl, Ralph Matter and Linus Matter.

Christian funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 31, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes. There will be a rosary beginning at 9:30 a.m. with a 10:00 a.m. visit to the church. The David-Donehower Funeral Home is serving the family.
