Sofia Balderas Martinez, 62, died peacefully on May 9, 2022 in Jourdanton. She was born on November 20, 1959 in Winters, Texas to Felipe and Guadalupe (Ramon) Balderas. She then married his high school sweetheart, Isabel L. Martinez, on September 18, 1973.

Martinez (April), Gino Martinez (Alice), Rudy Martinez (Esther), James Martinez, Stevenson Martinez; daughters, Amy B. Martinez (Roland), Roxanne Martinez (Eddie), Leticia Martinez (Alex), Gabriella Martinez, (Mario), Destiny Martinez (Christian), Lisa Hamble (Ray); brother, Felipe Balderas; and his sister, Sylvia Martinez (Seferino, Jr.). She is also survived by her 25 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

Sofia was predeceased by her parents, Felipe and Guadalupe (Ramon) Balderas; sister, Rosario Diaz; brothers, Daniel Balderas and Juan Ramon Balderas; and his nephews, René Balderas, Michael Balderas and James Martinez.

Sofia loved life and she loved her children and grandchildren. She was a strong, hard-working woman with a big heart, who was also a caregiver. For many years before her health affected her, Sofia always had her door open to anyone in need and never said ‘no’. She was a strong advocate for the community, constantly helping and giving back, or volunteering to help her daughter or son cook for county volunteer firefighter meetings. Sofia was an amazing cook, and we will definitely miss her homemade meals, or what I would say our favorite dads in tomato sauce. No one has done it better than her. Sofia loved being on social media or TikTok. We will miss her laughter, love and warm hugs and her special favorite expression that she would show all her children, “aka”. We all know what it is.

The bearers will be Xavier Martinez, Alex Diaz, Robert Martinez, JJ Mendoza, Dylan Luna, Rodney Balderas, Tony Gaitan and David Gonzales. The honorary bearers are Freddie Martinez, Spencer Stewart, Johnny Luna and Damien Vallejo.

A visitation for Sofia will be held Monday, May 16 at Hurley’s Funeral Home in Pleasanton, from 4-9 p.m., with a rosary reading at 7 p.m. Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 17 at Sainte Rose de Lima. Catholic Church in Charlotte, beginning at 10 a.m., followed by interment at the Charlotte Community Cemetery.
