Pope Francis issued an invitation today after leading the midday Regina Caeli on May 1, 2022. He asked the faithful to pray the Rosary for Peace every day in the month of May. But he followed the invitation with a penetrating question: if peace is really sought; whether there is a desire to avoid continued military and verbal escalation; if everything is done to silence the guns.
Today is the beginning of the month dedicated to the Mother of God. I would like to invite all the faithful and the communities to pray the Rosary for Peace every day of the month of May. My thoughts go to the Ukrainian city of Mariupol, “the city of Mary”, barbarously bombarded and destroyed.
Once again, from here, I renew my request that safe humanitarian corridors be established for those trapped in the steelworks of this city. I suffer and I cry thinking of the suffering of the Ukrainian people, and in particular of the weakest, the elderly and the children. There are even terrible reports of children being expelled and deported.
And as we witness a macabre regression of humanity, I wonder, with so many people in anguish, if peace is really sought; whether there is a desire to avoid continued military and verbal escalation; if everything is done to silence the guns.
Please, let’s not give in to the logic of violence, to the perverse spiral of weapons. May the path of dialogue and peace be taken! Let us pray.
